3-DAY DESERT STARGAZING TOUR FROM MARRAKECH TO MERZOUGA
Sahar Stargazing Experience
3-DAY DESERT STARGAZING TOUR FROM MARRAKECH TO MERZOUGA
This is the most popular desert tour from Marrakech and for good reason. Three days gives enough time to travel the southern route properly, spend a night in the Dades Valley, ride camels into the Erg Chebbi dunes at sunset, pass a night in the desert under the stars, and return to Marrakech at a comfortable pace. The itinerary covers the High Atlas, Ait Ben Haddou, the Dades Gorge, the Todra Canyon, and the Sahara, and returns via the Draa Valley – one of Morocco’s finest long-distance drives.
Stargazing in the Merzouga Desert
Stargazing is one of the unforgettable experiences included in our Morocco desert tours. Rather than being a separate activity, it is part of your desert camp experience and takes place during your stay in the Erg Chebbi dunes, as outlined in your tour itinerary.
How Our Stargazing Experience Is Organized
After enjoying a traditional dinner at the desert camp, we gather together and take a peaceful 10-minute walk into the heart of the dunes. Away from any artificial lights, you’ll reach a quiet location where the night sky reveals thousands of stars in remarkable clarity.
Our experience begins with fascinating stories about the nomadic people of the Sahara and how they relied on the stars for navigation and orientation across the desert. You’ll learn about their traditions, legends, and their deep connection with the night sky.
Using a professional laser pointer, your guide will introduce you to the most prominent stars, constellations, and celestial objects visible above the Sahara. With virtually no light pollution, the Merzouga dunes offer one of Morocco’s most spectacular stargazing environments, making this a truly memorable part of your desert adventure.

TOUR Itinerary
- DAY 1: MARRAKECH - HIGH ATLAS - AIT BEN HADDOU - DADES VALLEY
Pick-up from your Marrakech accommodation at 08:00. The route heads south-east, climbing the High Atlas via the Tizi n’Tichka pass (2,260 m), with stops to take in the views and visit traditional Berber villages along the way. A visit is made to the Ait Ben Haddou Kasbah – a remarkable example of pre-Saharan earthen architecture and one of the most recognised UNESCO World Heritage Sites in Morocco. Time is available to explore its lanes and towers before lunch at a nearby restaurant.
The afternoon continues along the Road of a Thousand Kasbahs, passing through Ouarzazate, the Valley of Roses, and Skoura before arriving in the Dades Valley. If time allows, a short detour is made to the dramatic rock formations in the Dades Gorge – locally known as the Monkey Fingers – before settling in for the night.
- DAY 2: DADES VALLEY - TINGHIR - TODRA GORGE - MERZOUGA
After breakfast, the route heads east to Tinghir, pausing at a viewpoint overlooking a wide oasis of date palms and Berber villages. From here it is a short drive to the Todra Gorge, where the river has cut a narrow channel through 300-metre limestone walls. Time is taken to walk the gorge floor before continuing south-east to Merzouga.
The camels are ready in the afternoon. The trek climbs through the Erg Chebbi dunes and pauses on a high ridge for the sunset before descending to the camp. After a shower and rest in your private tent, dinner is served at the camp with Berber music and a campfire.
STARGAZING EXPERIENCE – MERZOUGA DESERT
After dinner, we gather together and walk for around ten minutes into the dunes to a quiet, dark location where there is no light pollution.
We begin with an introduction to the mythology of the nomads and explain how they used the stars they observed at night to navigate during the day.
Using a professional laser pointer, we guide you through the night sky, introducing the most important stars and constellations.
- DAY 3: MERZOUGA - DRAA VALLEY - OUARZAZATE - MARRAKECH
An early wake-up for sunrise over the dunes. After breakfast, the return to Marrakech begins, this time taking the longer and more scenic Draa Valley route – Morocco’s longest river valley, lined with date palms, ancient kasbahs, and Berber villages for much of its length. Lunch is taken in Ouarzazate before the road climbs back over the High Atlas and drops into Marrakech by late afternoon.
