4-DAY STARGIZING DESERT TOUR FROM MARRAKECH TO MERZOUGA

The 4-day version of the Marrakech desert round trip solves the main drawback of the 3-day tour:

the long single-day return drive. By adding a third overnight stop on the way back, the itinerary becomes significantly more comfortable, and there is more time to linger at stops along the route. For those who prefer a relaxed pace without rushing through the landscapes, this is the better option.

Stargazing in the Merzouga Desert

Stargazing is one of the unforgettable experiences included in our Morocco desert tours. Rather than being a separate activity, it is part of your desert camp experience and takes place during your stay in the Erg Chebbi dunes, as outlined in your tour itinerary.

How Our Stargazing Experience Is Organized

After enjoying a traditional dinner at the desert camp, we gather together and take a peaceful 10-minute walk into the heart of the dunes. Away from any artificial lights, you’ll reach a quiet location where the night sky reveals thousands of stars in remarkable clarity.

Our experience begins with fascinating stories about the nomadic people of the Sahara and how they relied on the stars for navigation and orientation across the desert. You’ll learn about their traditions, legends, and their deep connection with the night sky.

Using a professional laser pointer, your guide will introduce you to the most prominent stars, constellations, and celestial objects visible above the Sahara. With virtually no light pollution, the Merzouga dunes offer one of Morocco’s most spectacular stargazing environments, making this a truly memorable part of your desert adventure.

TOUR Itinerary

Pick-up at 08:00 from your Marrakech accommodation. The route climbs the High Atlas via the Tizi n’Tichka pass at 2,260 metres, with stops for the mountain views and traditional Berber villages built into the hillsides. A visit follows to the Ait Ben Haddou Kasbah, with time to walk its lanes and climb to the granary at the top. Lunch is taken nearby before the afternoon drive along the Road of a Thousand Kasbahs through Ouarzazate, the Valley of Roses, and Skoura to the Dades Valley. If time allows, a detour is made to the rock formations known locally as the Monkey Fingers.

After breakfast, the drive east reaches Tinghir and its palm oasis viewpoint. The Todra Gorge follows, where limestone walls rise 300 metres above a narrow riverbed, with time to walk the canyon floor. The route then continues south-east to Merzouga, arriving in the afternoon. Camels carry you into the Erg Chebbi dunes, pausing on a high ridge for the sunset before descending to the camp. Dinner is served with Berber music around the campfire.

STARGAZING EXPERIENCE – MERZOUGA DESERT

  • After dinner, we gather together and walk for around ten minutes into the dunes to a quiet, dark location where there is no light pollution.
  • We begin with an introduction to the mythology of the nomads and explain how they used the stars they observed at night to navigate during the day.
  • Using a professional laser pointer, we guide you through the night sky, introducing the most important stars and constellations.

Sunrise over the dunes and breakfast at the camp. The return journey begins via the Draa Valley, Morocco’s longest river corridor, lined with date palm groves, ancient kasbahs, and small villages. Stops are made along the valley at points of interest, with lunch en route. The night is spent in a hotel or kasbah along the Draa or near Ouarzazate, breaking the long return drive into two comfortable sections.

After breakfast, the final drive crosses the High Atlas via the Tizi n’Tichka pass, with stops for views and photographs along the switchbacks. Arrival in Marrakech comes by early afternoon – a far more comfortable end to the tour than a nine-hour driving day.
