Every desert camp night includes our evening stargazing session — one of the most memorable parts of the entire trip.

After dinner, the group walks together for around ten minutes into the dunes, away from the camp lights, to a quiet spot where there is no artificial light of any kind. Out here, the sky over the Sahara is among the darkest in North Africa.

We open with a short introduction to Saharan nomadic mythology — how the desert people read the night sky, how specific stars marked the seasons, and how constellations served as navigational guides across featureless terrain during daytime journeys. The stars that tell you where north is. The ones that signal the shift between summer and winter grazing grounds. The ones that appear at harvest time.

Using a professional laser pointer, your guide then walks you through the sky overhead — identifying the most important stars and constellations visible that night, explaining their Arabic and Berber names, and tracing the stories behind them. By the time the session ends, you will look at the Sahara sky differently.
